Scout Badges: Master at Arms - Tom Macdonald

Tom Macdonald has been a junior member of Clachnacuddin Small Bore Rifle Club since September 2007.

The club mainly shoots .22 'prone' rifle.  We shoot indoors at 25 yards in the winter and at 50m/100yards outdoors in the summer - a synopsis of the club activites is given below but see http://www.clach-sbrc.org.uk for more details.

Clachnacuddin is a member of the NSRA - National Rifle Shooting Association - the UK governing body for small-bore shooting.  Induction and safety training is run under the rules and guidance of the NSRA - as are most of our competitions.  We are governed by the rules of that association (www.nsra.co.uk).

Tom regularly attended our supervised training sessions during the month of September, during that time he demonstrated competent and safe handling of firearms together with an understanding of the 'why' of the safety rules.  This allowed him to move on to range based activities.

In the months since then he has regularly attended the club and has shown a continuing improvement in ability and skill.  It is great to see such skill and application in one so young.

He has entered and competes in the monthly club competition for new-starts.  Shooting is a very open sport and Tom is competing with both other adult and other junior new-starts.

Target shooting is a Commonwealth and Olympic level sport.  To improve at the sport requires considerable concentration as well as the ability to discuss issues with the instructors/coaches.  Tom is able to intraspect and discuss issues with the assessors.

A brief background on the club

The Clachnacuddin Small Bore Rifle Club was formed around 1912.  We do not yet have many details of the early years of the club as all of the National membership information was kept in London and was destroyed during the Blitz in 1941.

We now shoot .22 rifle in our indoor clubhouse in Inverness.   The club accepts all members - provided they pass the checks imposed by the police firearms unit - our youngest junior is about 11 years of age, our oldest wont tell us his age and we have a significant number of female shooters - of all ages.

During the Winter Season the club meets Monday and Thursday evenings at our Club House with an approximate 1900 start.  During the Summer Season the club meets Monday evenings about 1900.  The club can provide access to all the equipment that is needed to take up the sport - rifles, ammunition, shooting jackets, gloves etc, together with basic training.

The club is active in the local leagues as well as in national postal leagues.  Club members are encouraged to participate in such leagues.  A smaller number of members regularly travel to 50meter/100yard outdoor shoots throughout Scotland and compete in SSRA outdoor shoots.

There is an induction course run by the club for new-starts/beginners.  This is usually in September before the start of the winter season.  Before shooting in the club we require that you either have a valid current Firearms Certificate/Shotgun Certificate or that you complete a questionnaire that can be submitted to the Police Firearms Unit prior to you handling any weapons at the club.
