Zero Point

Objective: To demonstrate the effects of a bad zero point and the effect it has on scores.
Skill level: Club shooters who can score about 90 or above.
Time: a pair of cards on consecutive details

Technique

Get warmed up and shot a few sighters on your spotter.

When you are happy with your sighter ...

Card 1 - using your normal direction of going around the card
  1. Sight in on one sighter (say the top left).  Then drag your rifle onto the 1st aiming mark WITHOUT ADJUSTING YOUR ZERO POINT. [If you are asking yourself "what does this mean?" then you are on the wrong exercise]
  2. fire
  3. Then align yourself as best you can back to the sighter and drag the rifle to the 2nd aiming mark.
  4. fire
  5. finish the card off the same way.
Card 2 - use a "reverse" direction of fire.

On the next detail repeat the experiment but shoot in a reverse direction. e.g. instead of shooting with a left-hand sighter put up a card with the sighters on the other side.  If you shot the first card using a top left sighter, then shoot this card using the bottom right sighter as your reference point.
Bring the cards for discussion/analysis.
